How do you propagate succulents in a tray?

Succulents are one of my favorite plants to propagate. They're drought-tolerant and usually don't need a lot of water or fertilizer. Succulent propagation is easy to do and can be done in a couple of different ways. Here’s how:


Step 1: Get some cuttings from your existing collection of succulents. Cut them into pieces about 3 inches long, leaving about half an inch of stem attached to each piece. You can take leaf or stem cuttings from any type of succulent plant — not just aloe vera or echeveria (two commonly used types).


Step 2: The best time to take cuttings is during the spring or summer when the plant is actively growing new leaves or stems. You should avoid hot days when it might cause the cuttings to wilt or die while waiting for them to root in water before moving them into soil so they can grow roots on their own.


Step 3: Fill a succulent propagation tray with potting soil. You can use any kind of potting soil; just make sure it’s not too rich or you might get root rot! Place the cuttings evenly throughout the hole so they don’t overlap or touch each other (this will help prevent disease). Water the soil until it is moist throughout but not soggy.


Tips: Leaf cuttings are often used for more delicate plants such as Anubis and Echeveria. The leaves are simply snipped off and placed in water until roots begin to form. The roots will then be separated from the base and planted in soil.


Stem cuttings are usually better suited for cacti and other more robust plants like Aloe Vera and Euphorbia Obesa. These types of cuttings can be taken at any point along the stem except where it has already been damaged (such as when pruning).

Where do you keep succulents when propagating?

Succulents need light to propagate, but not direct sunlight. If you have a greenhouse or other sunny windowsill, that's great. The temperature needs to be warm enough so that the cuttings don’t dry out or freeze during the rooting process.


If it’s too hot or cold, they will not grow as well and take longer to root. If you want to bring your new plants inside during winter months, keep them in a sunny spot near an east-facing window with temperatures above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
